What do we lose when we are robbed? Que perdemos cuando se nos roba?

What do we lose when we are robbed?

Yesterday, I responded to a phone call from my neighbor who had just had her car broken into at a park where she usually would go to jog and exercise. A place where she had never had a problem. But yesterday was different. They took her purse with phones (personal and company phones) also an Ipad, her driver’s license, credit cards and company ID

The good thing is that within an hour the police was informed, a report filed, the car was taken to the dealer for repair (smashed window); her credit cards canceled, the phone inactivated and even the lock s on her house where changed. So all I’s where dotted and t’s where crossed.
On one hand her husband realized how vulnerable we can be with all this technology and information in these gadgets. To which I responded but how effective they are when all is well? And today you can have an application on your phone to track it, or a GPS system to find your stolen car. For years we have been able to subscribe to services that can monitor and cancel all our credit card with just a phone call. Now you can do even more on the computer. But that is not the reason for this letter; it is all about what did my neighbor lost yesterday?

Apart from the intrinsic value of the phones, the purse, the IPAD which could add up to some good amount of dollars, yesterday she lost:

The purse her dad gave her as a gift, the IPAD which was very practical and useful, her phone filled with contacts and applications, another wallet with sentimental value. But that was not all she also lost faith in certain human beings, the trust of going back to that park, the frustration of not being able to do a thing. She will now question her moves, at the end they shook her life up and put her to think in this world we are living. She will now spend a couple of days without her car while it is fixed, she will have to go and get another driver’s license, go to the bank and open new accounts, wait for the new credit cards all of this inconveniences as results of what happened yesterday.
A theft, specially perpetrated on your home, car, belongings is a great loss, which does not only amount to the material cost of what was lost, it is a treason  an assault on your liberty of movement, it is the loss of items of sentimental value, of things with practical use that make who we are. Being a victim of a theft it leaves us scarred, marked; it either makes us more sensitive or cold. Our soul feels the loss of faith in humanity and we start a new journey hoping it will not happen again sice there is nothing else you can do.

The sense of frustration, defeat, of not having being able to do anything to prevent it is the most painful of all. So this is what she really lost yesterday; al that sits within the chest cavity; her heart and her brain which have to deal with these issues for now. Hoping that with every day she continues to move ahead.
