History Repeats itself La historia se repite

History repeats itself, La historia se repite...

As a student at the University of Puerto Rico from 1973-77, I along with 38,000 other students experienced two shutdowns which caused many of us not to graduate on time. And that implied for some of us to take two summer sessions with 18 credit hours, something you would need not only your counselors’ approval but the dean of your school.

I ended completing course requirements in December 1977, and got commissioned into the US Army on January 10th, 1978. This was six months after my original expected graduation date.  I reported to active duty on January 11th, 1978 at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and remained there until mid-February until my Basic Military Intelligence Basic Officers Course was scheduled to start.

The implications not only affected my graduation, since anyone who met course requirements in December would graduate the following summer, so My diploma say June of 1978. A graduation I missed since I was already on Active duty. And even worst, lost my initial assignment in the Army, since I had to be rescheduled to a different Officers Basic Course in Feb of 1978.  All that thanks to 3,000 plus Socialist (PSP) Partido Socialista Puertorriqueno), Communist (FUPI)  Federacion Universitaria pro Independencia) students who shut down a university of 38,000 plus students.

Remember in 1978 you did not have virtual classes, you went home, and if you were boarding in student housing you were also sent home. UPR was and is the top campus in PR where students come from all over the island come to Rio Piedras.  So, the businesses around the campus thrive with university life and in their absence their sales and services also suffered.

One thing is to march for a cause, to have a sit in, and another thing is to shut down a university, stop others from attending classes, destroying property, chanting slogans like

“Death to America ““Fight for Worldwide Intifada” ... yes go find the definition of Intifada and how many have been against Israel.... and then think who are they targeting if they want worldwide Intifada. Or why would you permit someone to desecrate your flag? like they have permitted at Columbia University

Why would you have a Hezbollah flag? A worldwide known terrorist organization, and why do you cover your faces? So, history once again repeats itself, when an older person tells you to be careful, watch for these indicators and warnings is for something they have already lived through.

The left, and yes when we say left it reflects Communism, and its bastard child Socialism are behind these movements. The slogans, the Modus operandi is the same. And they are rallying behind what could have been a noble cause “Stop the War” “free the hostages” “Ceasefire” More aid to Gaza”

Caveat Emptor (Buyer beware) read the history, our universities are full of left-wing professors who teach with and underlying purpose. Why if you want to stop a War do you need to say: “Down with Capitalism?” or “Fight for World Intifada?” Don’t become a useful stooge where someone who you think is supporting your cause takes over and injects his.

You end up being the fool, jailed, criminal record that will carry on for the rest of your life. Your time as a student is to absorb like a sponge knowledge, determine right from wrong and know how to challenge injustice via elections, and taking stances to create change.

Anytime there is violence, total disrespect to justice, anarchy, insubordination you are on the wrong side of history. And when you mature and grow out of your university years you will pay your consequences. Who will hire a violent instigator? Or one who desecrates the flag that permits him/her to voice his opinion? Or chants slogans and holds flags of terrorist organizations?  Keep that in mind.

And as a foot note the UPR has had several incidents where students and police officers got killed and the crime never been solved.

Jacinto Gutiérrez born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, was a University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras campus Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps cadet sergeant who was murdered on 11 March 1971 at the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps building during a riot by groups opposing the program's presence on the campus.[1] During the riots, two Puerto Rico Police officers, Riot Squad commander Juan Birino Mercado and Sergeant Miguel Rosario Rondón, also lost their lives.[2][3] No one has ever been charged with his killing.[4][5]

At 68 and ½ years old I finally know what I am worth......

At 68 and ½ years old I finally know what I am worth......

Don’t know if you have ever asked yourself what are you really worth? And no, it has nothing to do with your fortune, properties, savings or net worth. But in the eyes of insurability.

Let’s go over some background information:   According to The New England Journal of Medicine published a study in 2018, reporting that the most productive age in human life is between 60-70 years of age.

And the second most productive group of human beings is from 70 to 80 years of age. Followed by the third most productive the younger of the two aforementioned is 50 to 60 years of age.

Back to the subject, insurability.... Yes, insurance tables and your worth have nothing to do with your productivity, your work ethics, your dedication to all around you and all those people and entities that rather ask you for help knowing how busy you could be.

Benjamin Franklin once said:  that "if you want something done, ask a busy person." There's truth to that statement. After all, the busier we are, the better we manage our time. Busy people are able to get more done in a day because they don't waste time

And let’s get to the meat of the subject. Insurability, how it is measured, and is it still applicable?  When societies are talking about raising the retirement age, and we are living longer. Us Life expectancy has gone from 68.14 years to 79.25 from 1950 to 2023 and still we consider that your final days are more valuable, or devalued for the fear of paying you out.

At an early age of 23, as a lieutenant in the Army, a retired US Army LTC sold me, my first whole life insurance policy with as many riders as possible: double indemnity, accidental death, insurance for an unborn child.... wow he made a killing on commission. Needless to say, didn’t have a child until ten years later. But you learned, and from my 33rd year of life it has been Term insurance all the way, best bang for the buck but no cash value. I saw the industry evolve to “Universal life, and other sporty names, but kept firm with my 10-15-year terms until last year, when my provider sends me a letter saying this is the end. And from there on convert to whole life or pay some ludicrous amount.  That was they day I started questioning myself what I was truly worth. But still it took one more year until yesterday, when I had to make the decision and called them up to say, that it would not renew that policy and to get me coverage for the same amount of money I have been paying for the last 30 years and they did, And what it all ended up being was that I could only get 1/5 of what I had a day ago.  My $500,000-dollar policy became a $100,000 policy just like that.

So today I am worth 1/5 of what I was worth yesterday, and the last 14 years of my life have been the most active, the most involved, the most productive of my last 30 years or my entire life, but the fact is I am 68.5 years old is what matters to the insurance world, so I have depreciated in one day more than a new car sold taken out of the lot (13%) in my case 20%.

That is the way, as the Mandalorian creed says... insurance measures your probabilities in the later part of your life, fortunately my children are very well educated and my wife will be taken care of.  So, for the next ten years I will leave behind only 1/5 of myself to whom shall ever survive me.

So, do the mental drill, invest in your future, leave behind educated children that can earn a living by themselves.  And hopefully leave no debt for your survivors.

In Memory of Gabriel Perez 35 years ago a day never forgotten

Today brings to memory a man's biggest fear, loss and pain that of seeing his son die, or in the case of still births never lived. Regardless if he was 38 weeks, fully formed the fact he never breathed he is categorized as "stillborn"  Human kind is very obtuse in  medical terms, and maybe that is the way to categorize each event. But in our hearts, the first time you hear that ultrasound whosh, whosh whosh whosh sound of the heartbeat, and see it on the screen, the consequent visits and growth wih multiple  screen shots of his face, movement, the kicks, the movement palpable on his mother's belly all that is suddenly considered as not lived?. Never born, It is bad enough having the loss and still having to live unrecognized.

So today 35 years after his unboard death it is as vivid as it was that day. Today I stand before you at 67 almost 68 and the only known fact is that I am closer to be reunited with him in merely biological terms, no this is not a suicidal thought, it is a simple fact  that if I have the approximate same time frame of my father; I should have about 20 more years to live. so that puts me biologically  closer to reunion with him. Needless to say expect to enjoy these last 20 or more with my two lovely daughters, wife  and grand children.

But every 14th of September is his day and will always be a time to celebrate a Trisagion in his Memory and to remain in prayer  for him and his restful soul.

God has given me in the last 13 years the priviledge of having two assistants named Gabriel and both worked along side with me,  Giving me the opportunity to witnees what I could expect as a 22 year lod son 28 year old son, But today you are 35 my son, at the peak of your time maturing as a man in a more pure and restfull domain. Watch over your sisters, and their children. Keep protecting the generations to come. And we will reunite again one day to love, laugh and and spend the rest of our inmortal lives.

Love you

Dad

January 06, the Festivity of the Three Maggi that visited Jesus Christ, and What did Aunt Gemima meant to me all in a nut shell

Believe it or not there is a direct core

Believe it or not, there is a direct correlation between Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix and January 06, the Feast of the Epiphany …….

It has been 1 year, 1 month, 3 days since I last wrote on this blog, my trampoline to the world to talk about faith, family, world affairs, Geopolitics and other issues .

The night after the elections on 2020 just turned me off so bad I froze in time until today…..

Bot of my daughters are educated women in the fields of Information and Library Sciences and Communications. both have a Masters Degree in their fields and the youngest is still at it pursuing a Doctorates Degree.  I just have  a BS in Science, 1/2 a Masters in Strategic Intelligence which due to separation from the services at a retirement of 15 years did not complete. But I do have 24 years of Radio and Television experience as a military analyst in predominantly Spanish speaking media in the US and some other international forums. I was an instructor in the US Army from my first assignment as a Basic Training Officer, graduated from the Drill Sergeant’s School (ITC ) Instructor’s Training Course in 1978 and in 1991 as an instructor at SOA (School of the Americas) where I taught several courses to include the Intel portion of there Command & General Staff Officers Course.

I am a graduate of both the USA Command & General Staff College (1991) and Marine Corps Command & General Staff College (1989)

So when it comes to Communications I do think I know something about it.

I was also a son of a political refugee in 1961 when I arrived to these United States. And here is where my story starts…….

The Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix box I first encountered, had a face of a typical nanny, so much loved in both Latin American and American cultures in the early 17-19 hundreds. Nana as they were called raised us, with much love, even gave us the best meals, and counseled us when we did bad things and were there for a hug or to sleep in their arms when a tear was shed, or you simply had a bad day. so I could relate to the Iconic Aunt Jemima as a soothing , comfort zone product, thinking of my nana.

Roll the calendar several years and Aunt Jemima gets a facelift (Image 2) on the Syrup bottle to make her more appealing into the later part of the 20th Century. We'll leave it to some marketing guru to figure that out, or was it sales the issue? But then Comes the final evolution……… Radical elements on the left, pressure  Pear Milling Company to eliminate the face of even the 20th century updated version because it is a symbol of slavery, oppression, subjugation and the adverbs go on and on……..

First, I will tell you that I feel bad for the Pearl Milling Company, cause they may loose more market share because of product recognition, and name…. regardless if the same image and color codes remain… people have a tendency to pick a product at a market by name and if it does not look right they will move on…..

Second, no one will ever change my mind, of nana, and Aunt Jemima, never did my parents  put a connotation that it was racist, or slavery. It just simply did not cross our minds.

So he who controls communications, can change patterns of behavior, and thought to younger generations? huh? what a concept…… and that is exactly my friends what is going on, just in 60 years they did it with a pancake mix, and the brains of the millennials. Young adults now claim it was a necessary measure to change those symbols of slavery…. and by the way blame us in the 21st century for the sins of our forefathers, as this nation evolved into what it is today. And yes we now have to pay reparations to all descendants 14 generations ago.

I am not a biggot, I do not discriminate, i have friends from every part of the world and do carry blood of Taino Indians, Black and white Spaniard with a Greek Ancestry from the Canary Islands.

I can’t understand how a plain pan cake mix became a from line, to the point a manufacturer  had to change completely their name, an iconic name recalling so many beautiful memories into an article of hate, discrimination, slavery.…  and I frankly feel for them cause name recognition means a lot and may represent significant  losses of market share.

So that takes care of Aunt Jemima, now lets talk about the epiphany.

Here is an excerpt from: https://greekreporter.com/2022/01/06/epiphany/

Traditionally, the great feast of the Epiphany marks the end of the extended period of Christmas holidays in Greece.

Each year on January 6, hundreds of thousands of Greeks and visitors participate in the rich traditions that are observed in each and every city and town in the country, making it one of the most special holidays of the year.

Epiphany is one of the most important Christian feasts of the entire year because it is the commemoration of the revelation of Jesus Christ as God.

Epiphany is also known as Theophany; both of these terms derive from the Greek words for “revelation” and the “revelation of God,” or ”Επιφάνεια” (epipháneia) and ”Θεοφάνεια” (Theopháneia).

This unique feast is celebrated by both the Eastern and Western Church, and millions of people around the world participate in liturgies, Masses and many other traditional events which take place on this day

In the Orthodox Christian tradition, to which the Greek Orthodox Church also belongs, the feast of Epiphany is associated with the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.

According to archaeologists, Christians began celebrating Epiphany from as early as 200 AD in the Greek-speaking eastern parts of the Roman Empire, and these celebrations began as a commemoration of Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River.

However, Western European Christians increasingly began to associate Epiphany with the visit of the Magi to the newborn Jesus Christ.

For this reason, many parts of the West call Epiphany ”The Small Christmas” up to this day.
However, both Churches commemorate the groundbreaking revelation of God to the world, either via the three Magi or Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist.

So here we are again, January the 6th, and the News is all about the Riots at the Capitol a year ago, another embarrassing day for America, a day that should have never happened. a Regretful  day in our history, but should never overshadow, the fact that today is the Epiphany of Christ Jesus, the Theophany  of Christ….  a time when as little kids in Cuba we would get our gifts, Santa Claus we learned about when we got to the US in 1961, you would have to put grass for the camels outside and oared that you behaved and got something from these 3 Maggi….

That is what this day is all about, and it has been obliterated by the events of last year…. a Christ born and died almost 2,000 years, Baptized or visited by Maggi, the Greatest Story ever told is second page to a regretful day a year ago, huh interesting……

Aunt Jemima, are we trying to change values again? the real meaning of January 6th?  what a concept?
