The turtle and the man...

Yesterday was another day of great importance in my life. A day of lessons learned,
a costly reality of my actions, a close encounter to death but all for a good cause.

Saturday's are days of tradition, routines and special one on one with my father, my
mentor, my best friend which for the last eleven years goes to the cemetery  to visit the only love of his live, my mom. Every four weeks we alter the routine and add a trip to go and get a haircut.

It was on the way back that this story unfolds. It was a morning of sporadic rains in which I even decided to carry a couple of plastic sandwich bags to protect both of my phones. We did our routine with some light showers and as we finished getting our haircut we headed back to my father's house and on the way we suddenly stopped behind two cars that had stopped in the middle of the road. We observed a lady get out of the car and pick up a turtle, she proceeded to get her of the road and came back to the car. As she came back I asked her in what direction was turtle going? She pointed to the opposite direction were she had dropped her off. I thanked her and as she left I pulled across the street, parked my car and told my father to wait in the car that I was going to get the turtle and take her across the street.

Several months ago a priest, was giving a lecture about persistence, and made a story
about turtles..... In that story he explained that turtles have an instinct to get back to
their nesting areas and mentioned the story of how many times, people confronted with
this scenario. (Finding a turtle on the road) instinctively picked them up and put them on
the side of the road contrary to their intended destination. This is no help at all since the
turtle will once again direct itself across the road and risk death once more.

So yesterday, I decided I would do a good deed and did just that. Got out of my car,
went looking for the turtle approximately were the lady had put her (in a brush were she
couldn't move); picked her up and took her across the street. As I approached the other
side there is a ravine leading to a canal. It was quite wet, and full of obstacles (weeds,
garbage) so I decided to take her all the way to the side of the embankment of the
canal. As I got closer, noticed the canal embankment was over four feet high. I went
and moved closer to the canal and tried to release her, I skidded into the canal went in
waist deep as I struggled not to go in completely but the slimy slope made of concrete
sandbags became a real challenge and after several attempts I got out.

As I made it up to the car, remembered I had my cell phone in my pocket and yes, it got
wet. I got to the car and told my dad what had happened, tried fruitlessly to dry, clean
my phone to no avail. Reluctantly I accepted my fate, took dad home and headed back
home. At which time I called my wife on my company phone which did not get wet (on
my belt) and told her the story. It was only then that she brought up the danger and
potential aftermath of what else could have happened.

Twenty four hours later, as I recount the story to my great friend Andres Tremante an
individual who once managed a search and rescue division, and he explained to me that in all missions there are golden rules; key elements in all rescue missions: 1. You always go at least with a buddy team. 2. You always take your equipment and learn more about the area before getting there. I did not consider any of these key elements in my rescue mission with this turtle. I am fortunate to report that apart from some scratches on my elbows and knees, I am ok. I am $179.00 poorer, since I had to buy a new phone. It could have been worst. A broken bone, could have drown as consequences to a head injury or could have lost my glasses ($500.00), lost my wallet and checkbook which also got wet.

So a good deed turned to a calamity, but I did the right thing. Yesterday I made good on
what I learned, to properly assist a turtle in her traversing a road. I also learned that you
need to know what to do and to traverse difficult areas with a partner and be properly
equipped. My attempt to spare the turtle a certain death on a second attempt to cross
the road almost took me to my death. The pleasure of having done the right thing
became a bitter loss of $179.00 which was the replacement cost of a new phone.

Fortunately my scheduled contract renewal which was in September was waived (within
a couple months) so I was able to take advantage of special discounted rate for the
iPhone. So now I do have an iPhone thanks to a turtle.

So life is a learning journey which you have choices to make. Some are made
knowingly what to expect and others are just learn as you go. But always do the right
Things regardless of cost, as long as it does not involve losing your life
