Summary of Events Supported by Hezbollah fighters as well as the newly-formed National Defense Army which is made up of more than 10,000 fighters, including females from the minority Alawite and Shiite sects, regime forces also covered with the Yak-130 advanced fighter jets and rocket launchers continued their major offensive on the rebel-held neighborhoods and towns of Homs for the fifth day in a raw, inflicting heavy material damages and leaving dozens of civilians dead and wounded. They faced fierce resistance by the rebels, with the heaviest clashes taking place on the edges of al-Khaldiya neighborhood and leading to the death of dozens of fighters from both sides. Meanwhile, regime forces continued their attacks on opposition-held areas across the country, shelling more than 395 locations, 19 of which were pounded by fighter jets while activists said that six Scud-type missiles were fired towards the north from the base of the army’s 155 Brigade in the suburb of Damascus. They also bombarded other locations using all sorts of heavy weaponry such as rocket launchers, heavy artillery, thermobaric, cluster, phosphorus and TNT bombs, thus causing extensive material damages and leaving dozens of people dead and wounded. The continued violence in Syria left more than 156 people dead today. Regime forces and loyalist militiamen killed at least 112 people, including 13 children, six women and 61 rebel fighters, whereas the rebels killed more than 45 soldiers and militiamen. More than 14 people were killed and dozens more were injured as a result of the indiscriminate shelling the Idlib suburbs of Jabal Zawiya, Heeh, Habeet, Sarmeen and Binnesh. The indiscriminate shelling also left at least eight people dead in the neighborhood of Jobar in Damascus and in its provincial towns of Zabdani, Yalda, Daraya and Irbin in addition to five more in the neighborhoods of Qadi Askar, Hamra and Masaken Hanano in Aleppo city. The rebels achieved a breakthrough in Damascus as they reached the Walls of Old Damascus after storming a checkpoint and destroying an armored vehicle near the Eight of March Tower in the Sheikh Ruslan district located between Bab al-salam and Bab Sharqi, two of the many doors that surround the old city of Damascus. The rebels attacked several checkpoints in the Damascus-Homs international road in the district of Qalamon, killing and injuring many soldiers. They also shot down another fighter jet in the southern suburb of Idlib and stormed anartillery and mortar bases in the Daraa suburb of Ma’rya near the border with the occupied Golan Heights. The rebels captured big quantity of ammunitions and arms and detained nine soldiers while an officer and a number of soldiers fled into Jordan. The rebels destroyed four military tanks and several army vehicles during clashes that broke out in Idlib, Qunaitra and Daraa. Meanwhile, heavy fighting erupted on various fronts inDeir Azzour, Raqa, Hama, Idlib and Aleppo. The spokesperson of the Martyrs of Yarmouk Brigade announced responsibility for the abduction of the 21 UN peacekeepers from the Philippines near the border with the occupied Golan Heights. The rebel spokesperson accused the peacekeeping unit of providing aid to the besieged Assad’s army in the village of Jomla and demanded certain preconditions for their release.
