Summary of EventsSyrian rebel fighters scored a series of strategic advances in Deir Azzour, Damascus, Daraa, Raqa and Idlib as the regime continue to clamp down on civilians by shelling their areas and deprive them from electricity and communication means as it is the case now in the city of Raqa.
The rebels inflicted heavy losses on regime forces by capturing the bases of the
137thartillery regiment in the Damascus suburb of Khan Sheih, the
mortar company in Daraa suburb of Abdeen and the mechanized battalion of the
38th Brigade in the Daraa suburb of Sayda and the thermal power station in the village of Zezoun of the Idlib suburb of Jesser Shughour. They captured dozens of armored vehicles and anti-aircraft guns in addition to a big quantity of arms and ammunitions.
The rebels also stormed the base of the army’s 17
th division in the suburb of Raqa assisted by 30 army soldiers that defected to their side while clashes were still underway. The rebels interdicted the Damascus-Daraa
International Road near the Daraa suburb of Khirbet Ghazaleh announcing it as a military zone.
Also in Damascus, the rebels seized control of the Ghirbeh neighborhood in the town of
Sayeda Zeinab and destroyed a checkpoint near the suburb of Drousha as heavy fighting continued in the vicinity of the
Abbasids Square east of Damascus. Clashes also continued on various fronts in
Homs, Hama, Idlib,
Latakia and
Aleppo.
Meanwhile, regime forces continued their attacks on opposition-held areas across the country, shelling more than 378 locations, 23 of which were pounded by fighter jets mainly in Homs and its suburbs while three others were hit by Scud-type missiles. They also bombarded other locations using all sorts of heavy weaponry such as rocket launchers, heavy artillery, thermobaric, cluster, phosphorus and TNT bombs, thus causing extensive material damages and leaving dozens of people dead and wounded.
The continued violence in Syria left more than 156 people dead today. Regime forces and loyalist militiamen killed at least 116 people, including eight children, six women and 54 rebel fighters, whereas the rebels killed more than 40 soldiers and militiamen.
At least seven corpses, with their hands bound, were discovered in the regime-held neighborhood of Jouret Shribati in the southern district of Qadam in Damascus while four more charred corpses were discovered in the Aleppo suburb of Tal Shoghaib.
At least 11 people, including three children, were killed when a fighter jet carried out an airstrike on the Red Crescent Branch in the Damascus suburb of Douma. Some 11 people were also killed in another airstrike that targeted a residential area in the Deir Azzour suburb of Jazarat Bouhamid in the road linking Raqa with Deir Azzour. Another horrific massacre that claimed the lives of many civilians was also committed in in a similar way in the neighborhood of Rumaila in the liberated city of Raqa.
The regime indiscriminate shelling also left at least six people dead in the eastern district of Jobar in Damascus, six in the Idlib suburbs of Ariha and Deir Seita and three more in the neighborhoods of Tariq al-Bab and Shaar in Aleppo city.
A power blackout plunged the city of Raqa into darkness following an airstrike that targeted the city’s main power generator. Activists also reported complete communication blackout including telephone, mobile and internet as part of the regime’s collective punishment to the city that fell to the rebels earlier this week. A huge cloud of smoke billowed from the vicinity of Homs Oil Refinery after been shelled by regime forces today however, there was still no confirmation whether the shelling targeted the building of the refinery itself or the nearby paint factory.
The group of 21 Filipino UN peacekeepers seized by Syrian rebels in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights was handed over to the Jordanian authorities after been captured on Wednesday. The Jordanian government spokesman and the Philippines ambassador in Amman Olivia V Palala confirmed the news today.
