Summary of Events At least 263 people died today throughout the country, with regime forces and militias stepping up their attacks on civilian areas, killing at least 229 people, mainly in Aleppo and Homs, including 15 children and seven women. Fighting also continued across the country, leaving at least 17 rebels and 34 regime soldiers and militiamen dead. Regime forces shelled as many as 351 different locations across the country using cluster, phosphorus and explosive bombs. Some 138 locations were shelled by mortar shells and 120 others were pounded by artillery. More than 62 locations came under rocket shelling while fighter jets and helicopter gunships struck 24 more. In Aleppo, more than 99 people died, 70 of whom were killed in twin-explosions that targeted the civil engineering faculty of Aleppo University. There has been conflicting accounts on the nature of this attack. While many activist groups and eyewitnesses confirmed that regime warplanes carried out airstrikes on university, state-media said the explosions were caused by “terrorist” car bomb attacks. In Homs, activists reported two massacres that claimed that lives of more than 62 people, 42 of whom were executed and burnt by regime forces and militiamen in the village of Howaysa in the northern suburb of Homs. Meanwhile, dozens more were killed and injured in the provincial town of Houla which was subjected to heavy artillery and mortar shelling in the early morning hours. Regime forces also killed 36 people in Damascus and its suburbs, five of whom were executed near the provincial town of Hafir Tahta. Meanwhile, dozens of civilians and rebel fighters were killed and injured due to the heavy fighting, shelling and summary executions that took place throughout Daraa, Idlib, Deir Azzour and Raqa. Rebel fighters said they stormed the customs office in the Damascus suburb of Deir Atiya. In Raqa, the rebels seized control of the Ma’dan district in the northern Raqa province. They ran over the premises of the military and political security branches, killing and detain a number of security personnel and militiamen. Fighting intensified in the southern province of Daraa where the rebels said they destroyed three military tanks and two armoured vehicles in the provincial towns of Baser Harir, Yadouda, Ghabaghib and Bosra Sham.
