Summary of Events Rebel fighters took control of the 46th regiment in the western suburb of Aleppo, the last bastion of regime forces in the area and the biggest military base where its artillery and tanks used to bombard the surrounding towns and villages as well as the city of Aleppo. The base also was the main reinforcement’s source to regime forces fighting in Aleppo city. The rebels acquired more than ten military tanks and a number of rocket launchers, heavy artillery in addition to a big quantity of arms and ammunition. The rebels also seized control of another air defence base in the district of Sayeda Zeinab near Damascus and shot down a helicopter gunship in the East Ghouta district of Damascus province. Fighting also erupted in the central square of Abasyeen while a roadside bomb targeted the head of the state security branch in Damascus but his death couldn't be confirmed. The rebels also continued pressing forward in the province of Deir Azzour, besieging the Deir Azzour airbase and launching a barrage of mortar and rocket shells on it. Clashes also continued on several fronts in Aleppo, Homs, Daraa and Latakia whereby the rebels killed and detained dozens of army soldiers and militiamen in addition to destroying and acquiring a number of military tanks and armoured vehicles. The Chief Justice of the court of Deir al-Zour, Ali al-Aoun, announced his defection from Bashar al-Assad’s regime citing the systematic killing of the Syrian people. Aoun, who was also a member of the ruling Baath Party, said that dozens of Syrian officials and party members are going to follow in his footsteps very soon. Regime forces continued their attacks on opposition areas across the country, shelling as many as 140 different areas mainly in Damascus, Homs, Aleppo and Idlib. They shelled more than 66 areas using mortar shells and 55 others were shelled using heavy artillery. Meanwhile, 19 areas where shelled with rocket launchers and five more were bombarded by regime fighter jets. Activist voiced alarm at the deteriorating conditions in the Damascus suburb of Daraya which have been under fierce and indiscriminate shelling using all sorts of heavy weaponry amid attempts to invade the town by more than 2000 troops and 20 tanks. Activists fear that regime forces will commit a similar massacre to the one which claimed more than 600 lives few months ago. Regime forces killed more than 75 people today, including four women, three children and 18 rebel fighters. More than 26 people killed in Damascus and its suburbs including five civilians who died due to the indiscriminate shelling in the provincial town of Daraya. Some 15 people died in Aleppo including three rebel fighters during clashes in the provincial town of Atareb while ten more people were killed in the suburb of Idlib, including three rebel fighters during clashes and many others that died due to the indiscriminate shelling in the towns of Ma’arrat Masrin and Ma’arrat Noman. They killed eight people in Hama, of which three rebel fighters died in an ambush in the provincial town of Taqseis and eight more in Daraa including a female teenager that was shot dead by a sniper in the provincial town of Bosra.
