Seized control of an air defence base near the southern neighbourhood of Hajar Awad in Damascus. Fired mortar shells into the Mazeh airbase in Damascus. Shot down a helicopter gunship in the Idlib suburb of Kafarzeita. Shelled a weapons depot in the Homs suburb of Mahin and destroyed a big part of it. Summary of Events Italy has recognised the newly formed Syrian National Coalition as legitimate representative of the Syrian people, Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti told reporters in Doha today. The EU has followed that lead declaring the newly formed political body as the only representative of the aspirations of the Syrian people. Syria’s Chargé d'affaires in China Huda Orfaly announced her defection from the Assad regime today, she said she has joined other defected Syrian diplomats in what she called “Congregation of Syrian Diplomats for Democratic and Civil State” The rebels seized control of three more military sites near Damascus. The 274thregiment and the electronic security brigade in the East Ghouta district in addition to an air defence base in the southern district of Hajar Aswad. They also shot down a helicopter gunship in the Idlib suburb of Kaferzeita and attacked a number of military posts and convoys in Idlib, Daraa, Homs, Hasaka, Deir Azzour and Aleppo, killing and injuring dozens of soldiers besides destroying a number of military tanks and armoured vehicles. Heavy fighting erupted between rebel fighters and armed Kurdish PYD militiamen in the mixed Arab and Kurd town of Ras al-Ain in the province of Hasaka leaving dozens of casualties from both sides which reached a seize-fire agreement later on. Regime forces escalated their attacks on opposition areas across the country, shelling as many as 183 different areas mainly in Damascus, Homs and Idlib. They fired mortar shells on more than 76 areas and shelled 76 other areas with heavy artillery. Meanwhile, 19 areas came under rocket shelling and six more were bombarded by regime fighter jets and helicopter gunships. Regime forces continued their onslaught on the Damascus suburb of Daraya which have been subjected to a suffocating siege and fierce shelling using all sorts of heavy weaponry for the 11th consecutive day with more than 100,000 people taking refuge in buildings’ basements and shelters amid complete power and water outage. The regime brought in troops from the mainly Druze, Alawite and Shiite areas in Daraa, Suwaida, Jableh and Tartus to support its weakening defence lines in Damascus. Regime bolstered security in the capital by setting up more than 350 checkpoints across the city. Regime forces killed more than 102 people, including six children, four women and 37 rebel fighters in addition to injuring 75 others.                      They killed 38 people in Damascus and its suburbs, the majority died due to the heavy shelling in the neighbourhood of Hajar Aswad as well as in the provincial towns of Daraya, Erbin, Moadamiya, Douma, Hamouriya and Jesrin, meanwhile, six rebel fighters were killed during clashes in the provincial town of Bowayda. They also killed 22 people in Aleppo including 13 rebel fighters. Some 14 people died in Idlib including five family members that were killed due to the heavy artillery shelling on the provincial town of Abu Thohour while ten rebel fighters were killed during clashes in the Latakia suburbs of Turcoman Mountain and Salma district.
