Clashes intensify in Damascus as Brahimi pushes for ceasefire   The aftermath of the heavy fighting and unremitting shelling in the neighborhood of Qadam in Damascus Today's Top Stories Heavy clashes renewed in the capital and spread into new neighborhoods. Regime forces unleashed aerial and rocket bombardments on Damascus and its suburbs killing at least 43 people. The U.N. and Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, arrived in Damascus to push for ceasefire during the upcoming Muslim holiday of Eid Al-Adha. Shot down a helicopter gunship near the Wadi Adayf military base in the Idlib suburb of Ma’arrat Noman. Seized control of Aakaba neighborhood in the old city of Aleppo. Summary of Events Heavy clashes renewed in the capital and spread into other neighborhoods as rebel fighters attacked several military checkpoints near the bridges of Kashkoul and Mutahaleq Janoubi in central Damascus as well as in the neighborhoods of Dowelaa, Jobar, Qabun, Barzeh, Tishreen, Hafiriya and Yarmouk refugee camp, leaving a number of army soldiers dead and many others wounded. Heavy fighting erupted in the Damascus suburbs of Zamalka, Erbin and Harasta as well as in the Idlib suburbs of Ma’arrat Noman, Kafar Takharim and Kafar Harem. Clashes were reported in the Homs suburb of Qusayr and the neighbourhoods of Saif Adola and Saladin in Aleppo city as well as in its provincial town of Atareb where the rebels continue to besiege the headquarters of the 46 regiment. Fierce battles also broke out in the cities of Deir Azzour, Boukamal, Daraa and Raqa bringing the total death toll to 46 army soldiers and more than 32 rebel fighters. Regime forces unleashed heavy aerial and rocket bombardments on the southern neighbourhoods of Damascus, as well as in its provincial towns of Sbeneh, Madeira, Douma, Harasta, Hamouriya, Erbin, Ain Tarma and Yalda, leaving at least 43 people dead, of which 15 fell in the town of Erbin. The shelling caused extensive damage to dozens of residential buildings and left scores of people wounded. At least 18 civilians were killed in Aleppo city including five family members that were shot dead by snipers deployed at the traffic police headquarters. Many more people were killed due to the indiscriminate shelling in the neighbourhoods of Qastal Misht, Ferdous and Ansary. Regime warplanes continued dropping ordnances including cluster bombs on the Idlib suburbs of Bennesh, Saraqeb, Kafrouma, Ma’arrat Noman and Jabal Zawiya, leaving at least 16 people dead and dozens more wounded. The joint Assad-Hezbollah forces resumed their military offensive on the province of Homs, shelling more than 25 different locations and killing at least 7 people, most of them fell in the towns of Qusayr, Abel, Nazariya and Josiya. Regime forces also resumed their massive military operations amid suffocating siege and indiscriminate attacks on residential areas in Daraa, Hama, Latakia, Raqa and Qunaitera leaving scores of people dead and many more wounded while destroying dozens of houses, thus prompting a mass exodus.
