Summary of EventsFighting intensified in Syria’s capital, Damascus, where the rebels stormed a heavily-guarded checkpoint near Damascus’s largest bus station in the district of
Qabounknown as “Karajat Bolman”. They also fired a barrage of
mortar shells at a military barrack in the Maidan district and repelled an attack on the neighborhood of
Jobar. They continued their attacks on police stations in the
Yarmouk refugee camp and
Qadam neighborhoods in the south.
This came as more than 700 soldiers, including 50 officers, defected from the Assad army in the suburb of Damascus. Meanwhile, a group of defected military pilots equipped with ten operational fighter jets announced the formation of the First Air Force Division of the Free Syrian Army.
Also in the suburbs of Damascus, the rebels stormed a Clinique that was use by the military in the town of Adra and destroyed two military tanks and an armored vehicle in the towns of
Zabadani, Harasta and
Aqraba near Damascus Airport.
In Aleppo, the rebels continued their attacks on
Aleppo’s international airport and the nearby
airbase of Nerab and killed some 25 soldiers in the eastern suburb of Tal Aran as they also bombarded the Military Factories in the town of Sfeera.
In Deir Azzour the rebels seized control of the strategic checkpoint of Kobar in the western suburb of Deir Azzour after killing more than 30 soldiers including high-ranking officers. They also continued their attack on the army’s
113th regiment and imposed a suffocating siege on regime forces taking position in the TV station in the village of Ayash.
The rebels took over the second largest military checkpoint in the city of Daraa known as the
Qobba checkpoint, located in the neighborhood of Tariq al-Sad, after killing dozens of regime soldiers and forcing the rest to flee. Meanwhile, regime forces burned down and abandoned a hospital in the town of Sayda following a mass military defection.
The rebels seized control of the
town of Tayba in the eastern suburb of Homs near the ancient town of Palmyra. They also shot down a
fighter jet in the Homs suburb of Talbisa and stormed the military checkpoints of Tal Othman, Gherbal and Shalish near the Hama suburb of Kafrnbouda.
Today’s death toll reached more than 168. Regime forces and loyalist militiamen killed at least 98 people, including ten children, nine women and 41 rebel fighters, whereas the rebels killed more than 70 soldiers and militiamen.
Regime forces continued their attacks on civilian areas within the rebels-held towns in Syria, shelling as many as 317 locations across the country, six of which were shelled with Scud-type missiles while nine more were pounded with warplanes that used cluster, phosphorous, thermboaric, Napalm and explosive bombs, causing extensive material damages and forcing thousands of civilians to flee their homes.
In Damascus and its suburbs, regime forces opened their fire on a vehicle carrying civilians escaping the violence in the town of Daraya, leaving a woman and two of her children dead. Dozens more people were killed and injured as a result of the indiscriminate shelling in the provincial towns of Nabek, Moadamiyat al-Sham and Douma.
In response to the heavy losses the regime forces sustained in Hama today, they pounded the ancient town of Castle Strait, leaving at least three people dead and dozens more injured.
More than 12 people were shot dead by regime snipers in Aleppo city, seven of whom died in the neighborhood of Maidan. Regime shelling also left four people dead in the villages of Tarkan and Abou Tiya in the Aleppo suburb of Sfeera and one more in the village of Kaferajouz in the Latakia suburb of Salma.
