Summary of Events
Rebel fighters scored a series of unprecedented victories throughout the country, seizing control of an airbase and several military checkpoints. Meanwhile, a car bomb explosion struck a border crossing between Syria and Turkey, leaving dozens of people dead and wounded, including Turkish citizens.
In Damascus, the rebels stormed what’s so called the Music Barrack in the eastern neighborhood of Jobar after blasting it with a car bomb, resulting in the death of many regime soldier and the detention of many others. The rebels repelled the regime’s ground assault on the neighborhoods of Qadam, Asali and Qaboun while for the first time, clashed with security forces near the French embassy in the Jesser Abyad district. Liwa Abou Mousa al-Ashari also fired a barrage of mortar shells into the Kamal Masharqa Barrack in the district of Zablatani near the Abbasids square.
In the outskirts of Damascus, the rebels stormed a military checkpoint in the Mutahaliq Janoubi road near the town ofZamalka, destroying a number of military vehicles and capturing arms and ammunition. They also stormed a military position guarded by the Republican Guard Corps in the suburb of Adra and interdicted the Damascus-Homs international road in the suburb of Nabek near the University of Kalamoon.
In Aleppo, the rebels stormed the Jarah airbase in the eastern suburb of Aleppo, seizing control of several buildings and killing dozens of regime soldiers. Rebel fighters from Jabhat al-Nusra and other rebel battalions destroyed a convoy of five military tanks in the town of Tal Aran near the town of Sfeera. They also stormed a hospital in the town of Dwerina which was used as a military barrack by regime soldiers.
Fighters from Jabhat al-Nusra bombed the compounds of State Security and Military Security in the Hasaka suburb of Shadadi. They also took full control of the oil fields in southern suburbs of Hasaka and interdicted the road connecting Aleppo with Raqa and Deir Azzour.
Some 20 soldiers defected to the rebels’ side in the city of Deir Azzour. Meanwhile, the rebels attacked several military checkpoints in the Daraa suburb of Harrah and seized control of the Harash military checkpoint in the district of Daraa al-Balad in Daraa city. Heavy fighting also continued in the Homs suburb of Qusayr as well as in the suburbs of Hama andIdlib.
An explosion rocked the Baba al-Hawa border post between Turkey and Syria, leaving at least 12 people dead, including Turkish citizens in addition to leaving 28 others wounded. The explosion was planned to target a delegation of the opposition Syrian National Council, however, the bomb went off some time before their arrival killing a number of civilians including children, women and media activists.
Regime forces continued their attacks on residential areas within the rebels-held towns in Syria, shelling as many as 302 locations across the country, 16 of which were pounded with warplanes using cluster, phosphorous, thermboaric and explosive bombs, causing extensive material damages and forcing thousands of civilians to flee their homes.
Today’s death toll reached more than 151. Regime forces and loyalist militiamen killed at least 106 people, including 16 children, ten women and 26 rebel fighters, whereas the rebels killed more than 45 soldiers and militiamen.
At least 18 people, including ten children, were killed in Aleppo city due to the indiscriminate artillery and rocket shelling in the neighborhoods of Karm Katerji, Myasar and Masaken Hanano.
In Damascus and its suburbs, regime soldiers executed nine civilians in the neighborhood of Jobar and in the provincial towns of Adra and Harasta. Meanwhile, nine more people were killed due to the indiscriminate bombardments on the neighborhoods of Asali and Jobar as well as on the provincial towns of Zamalka and Darya.
